Lava Lake

Lava Lake is a project created to practice different environmental modeling techniques including sculpting rocks, modeling props, and creating custom shaders for the lava. Modeling and rendering was done in Blender, sculpting in ZBrush and texturing in Substance Painter. This is the start to a series of various environmental shots that I am creating.

Animation

Render

The intention of this project was simply to test out some modeling, sculpting, and texturing techniques, but I wanted to bring it all the way. I really wanted to make the lava pop and the sword the focus so I lowered my depth of field and targeted the sword, and I added bloom in post-compositing to add to the emission.

Modeling

The sword was modeled entirely in blender, using mostly box modeling for the blade and handle, and the screw modifier to create the straps.

Sculpting

As I have been learning ZBrush for character sculpting, I have come across a variety of tips and tricks that I have been able to apple to environmental sculpting to create dynamic and interesting rock shapes.

Texturing

The texturing for the sword was done in Substance Painter where I used a preset material for the straps and adjusted the coloring, and for the sword blade and handle I used a combination of fill layers with dirt and metal edge generators, and alpha stamps to create the impressions.
